Antarctica Webquest

Activity 1
Use the image below to get an idea of how much each item weighs. Use this as a rough guide to estimate the items you will be taking.

Australia's Involvement in Space Exploration:

Why is space travel is important?

Show the following video which also highlights zero gravity and the fun people have with it https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=coX1u2_KBsQ

How does Australia contribute to investigating Space? Which countries do most of the work?

Get into groups of 2 or 3.
Get an I-pad and go onto the blog.

Take a look at these websites and other videos and find out what Australia's Involvement in Space exploration. The links below will give you some information. You are also welcome to find your own websites.

Two Golden Rules

1. Do not write word for word.
2. Show where you got your information from. That is, write down the website.

Look at the websites and videos below. Read the first one and write down 4-10 points about Australia's contribution that you found out on this page. You may write more if you want.

(simple to understand)

This document is large so I do not expect you to read all of it. Please understand that this document is a timeline of Australia's Contribution to the Space Race. Simply choose one contribution from each decade.

(timeline of Australia's contribution)

Watch the video below and answer the questions:
1. What is this video about?

(Australia joins the Space Race)

Is there anything else you wish to add about the Space Race?

1. Write down your findings into your book with a partner. This is your draft.
2. Create a poster on butcher's paper, a Prezi or a Google presentation.

Assessment:
The point is that it will needed to be presented back to the class. You will be marked on your knowledge, not just reading but understanding the content, engagement and explaining where you got your material from. You will have 3 minutes to present. Presentations will be marked as an assessment.

Fires! How Others Can Learn from Australia

1. "Bushfires" --> What can you tell me about it? What comes to mind? Have you had any experience with bushfires?

2. What do you think Indigenous Australians people might have thought/think about bushfires?

This video outlines how Indigenous Australians view and used to view bushfires. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FqMwDTEe1R4

3. Show a video of bushfires to students. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UMmGE5RNrR4

Task A:

Search for bushfire videos in Australia on the Ipads.

(You have 10 minutes to search for a few videos using the connectors and watching with a partner).

Report back on your findings.

Teacher Instructions:

Teacher shows where California is located on a world map.

Task B:

1. Research videos about bushfires in other locations such as California.

a) Think about what you noticed in those videos. (Students may watch other videos on fires in California on their i-pads if time allows).

b) Think about what was similar and what was different between the fires in Australia and the fires in California?

c) Discuss with the class: Get students to get into groups and brainstorm how (things they witnessed on the videos and general knowledge).

How could Australia help other countries and states such as California so they could reduce their bushfires?

Task C:

Research the following:

a) The methods Australian fire fighters use to battle bushfires
b) How Australians stay safe from bushfires (your book may help you).

Try and use a few (at least 2 websites to find your information) and perhaps a video.

You may show a video, but only a small segment and you MUST explain what the video is about.

Assessment: You will need to present back (in groups of 3) about what you have learnt and look to persuade us as to why:

“Why Australia Should Lead the Way When It Comes to Teaching the Rest of the World How to Battle and Stay Safe from Bushfires”

You can use any presentation tool and you will be marked as A, B, C, D or E based on contribution, knowledge and how much you contribute. Your presentation will need to be below 3 minutes.

Can Our Beliefs Affect Our Environment?

Lessons 5 - 10

Teacher Instructions:

Students get white boards and markers and work in pairs.

What beliefs do you have?
What are beliefs and practices?
Where do we see them?
Why do we have them?
(no right or wrong answers)

They rub our answers before writing again. They are allowed to discuss with their partners before writing. Students choose students at random and they must hold up their boars or contribute to an answer. Or both.

- How do you think your belief and practices affect the way you live?

- How do you think it would or could affect the environment? (write this on the whiteboard after students have had a chance to discuss)

The rest is done in their books:

What do you think would be difference between white people/western people/European settlement/modern man would be different to indigenous Australians people.

What do you think of the new units being built next to St Felix. What are your thoughts?

Students share back.

Teacher Instructions: (Heavy Input Lesson)

Show the following video which outlines the way indigenous Australians  view the land and their beliefs about it.

What did you find interesting about the video? (maybe a discussion or maybe they can write it into their books).

Read/show the book "Window". And maybe Rabbits to compare and contrast.

Show the following video about what the amazon is https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JEsV5rqbVNQ

The following video shows its destruction https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sNl4bJt0sUs

This video shows a time lapse of one section of the Amazon. Show students and then get their thoughts. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hllU9NEcJyg

Have a discussion about this. Compare and contrast the two videos and perhaps the books.

Project Task
Working in pairs, you must answer the questions below. We would like you to share your opinions and research. Basically, you must have an opinion about each question.

You may work in pairs or individually.

You can present and answer these however they would like. For example, you can create a Prezi, a Google presentation, you can do it as a poster or use another tool.

You will have to hand it in at the end of Week 9. It will be marked and used as your assessment.

Two Golden Rules

1. Do not write word for word.
2. Show where you got your information from. That is, write down the website.

- Why do we have to clear land and chop trees?
- Are people who chop trees down to put farms and buildings bad people?
- If  Indigenous Australians people don't do it for example, does that make them better?
- What would a world look like where forests and bush were never chopped? Would it be possible?
- How do you think the elders of Aboriginal tribes think about modern man and the way they use the land?
- How can you change one thing to help save the land?
- If you could speak to Barrack Obama and Tony Abbott tomorrow about this, what would you have to say to them?
