Signs and Symbols

TASK: Write 3 examples of symbols you use or see regularly, 3 signs you see regularly and 2 rituals. For the rituals, you mist explain what it is and preferably it needs to be a ritual that you or your family follows.

Sign
Signs point to something or instruct someone about something. Signs are physical things. Some common signs include stop signs and other street signs as well as signs in public places such as bus stations, malls and airports.
Signs are informative, mandatory, warning and advisory. For examples, when you see the traffic light turn red, you automatically stop driving or riding a motorcycle. In hospitals, there is a sign that contains a burning cigarette that is crossed out inside a big circle. It is a prohibitory sign in the sense that you are warned that the hospital is a no smoking zone. Similarly, you see a sign depicting a horn that is crossed out on a school building. It depicts that it is mandatory to maintain silence, and you must not honk the horn in the zone. ‘No U turn’ and ‘sharp turn’ are signs on roads to avoid accidents and thus classify under warning signs.
Symbols
Symbols are signs that stand for something else. For example, a cross is a symbol of Christianity worldwide just as plus sign has come to mean Red Cross or hospital in general, and even an illiterate person knows he can get medical services when he sees this symbol. There are symbols for elements in chemistry, which are derived by abbreviating their names such as O standing for Oxygen. In a similar manner, there are hundreds of symbols in all parts of the world that stand for something else and readily recognizable.

In contrast to a physical sign, symbols represents something else by association, resemblance or convention...

For example, the well-known image of a dove symbolizes peace, rather than just depicting the bird itself. Common symbols that are not considered signs include a dove to represent peace, a cross to represent Christianity or even punctuation marks such as the question mark or the exclamation mark.
Difference Between Sign and Symbol
Signs tell you something, symbols represent something else. also, signs are used for everyone to see, whereas symbols may be used so that only a specific person/group of people know what it means. signs may have symbols on them (and often do), but not the other way around.
One big difference between a sign and a symbol is that signs literally have a language of their own; a toilet is meant for ladies by a sign over the door of the place, just as you immediately know that there is a restaurant nearby with a sign that is displayed on road. On the other hand, symbols are abstract or subjective in nature and require interpretation. A rainbow stands as a symbol of good luck while a thunderstorm on a rainy day has come to reflect a bad omen.
Ritual
A religious or solemn ceremony consisting of a series of actions performed according to a prescribed order. "ancient fertility rituals"

A ritual is a well-defined sequence of words and actions designed to focus attention, establish significance, and achieve a beneficial result. Although some people think we have lost our sense of ritual, modern society makes use of many rituals to mark the beginning of significant events (baby showers, grand openings, ship launchings); the ending of life, or ways of life (funerals, bachelor parties, happy hours); the
completion of important tasks or performances (graduation ceremonies, toasting successful negotiations, applause); the transition of one state or time period to another (birthday parties, anniversary celebrations, religious ceremonies like baptism/bar mitzvah/confirmation) and the making of connections (marriage ceremonies, church services).

Please be mature about the video below. The word "bum" is in relation to what homeless people are referred to. It is not a rude word when used in this context but more of a description of someone who does not have a home and lives on the streets. It is not a word that should be used to describe people however unfortunately people refer to those who are homeless by using this term. I hope this video shows that homeless people need to be respected and not referred to in this way.
