Once you have finished your string telephones, answer the following questions:
Once you have finished your string telephones, answer the following questions:
- How well did the string telephone work?
- Looking at your string telephone, why has communication evolved (upgraded/improved) in the past 70 years?
- Where do the sound waves travel in the string telephone?
- What could you do to make the string telephone work better?
- Early Finishers:The String Telephone Company has hired you as engineers. They want you to design a new string telephone for people who are six feet or more apart from each other. They think that this would be useful for siblings in different rooms or friends who live next door. You have 10 minutes to brainstorm with your partners and draw your new designs. You may use new materials to test your design. (Have students draw their new designs on the worksheets or blank paper.)
- Choose a present form of communication (pick out of a hat)
- Task: Explain why it is an effective form of communication; identify the positive and negative effects of this form of communication.
- Use at least 2 websites or videos and you MUST include this information. /2
- You may be asked to present back to the class. You will do it on A3 paper.
You will work in pairs or in groups of 3.
Things to consider:
EFFECTIVE FORMS OF COMMUNICATION
- How it works
- Include logo
- Who created it?
- When it was created?
- Why was it created?
- What's makes it so popular?
/10
POSITIVES EFFECTS OF YOUR COMMUNICATION
- Where it can be used that's good
- how reliable is it? (both)
- is it efficient?
- Costs

Science and Technology – Antarctica Design and Make
Year
6 Term 1 2015
Your
task will be to create an Antarctic base which you will present to Year 5 at
the end of the Term. Each fortnight you will be expected to focus on one key
aspect relating to your base. You will work in groups of 4. Part of your endeavor
will be to work closely with one another just as you would if you were in
Antarctica. Yes, arguments and disagreements will occur, however, just like
real explorers, you will have to find ways to overcome them. You will be
expected to write down how you were able to overcome an issue on the Edmodo
website after each lesson and what you did individually.
Go
to www.edmodo.com and put in the code: q3re87
Your
task will be to create a base and a presentation to go with it. As you learn
more in English and HSIE, you will be able to add to your task.
Week by Week: You do not need to follow this schedule as a weekly basis. It is simply set up this way so you may be able to tick most boxes on your rubric. Think of it as a guide.
Week
1:
Set up the Edmodo account and go through what is expected of the task
including rubric.
Week
2:
Clothing
– What type of clothing would you need in your base while you are in
Antarctica? The website below may help you.
Weeks 3-4
Bases – Your major task is to create a base.
Then websites below will give you some help in regards to what your base should look like.
1. You will need to explain
why you have chosen your base and the materials you selected.
2. Also explain how your base
will not damage the fragile ecosystem (will not damage the environment).
3. Provide a blue
print/layout of your base labelling each room
Week 5
Research and find out what the Antarctic Treaty is all about and add it into your
slides.
Week 6-10
Create your base. You will need to bring in materials from home.
You are a reporter project!
You have to pretend you are a reporter and you must create a live report about your natural disaster that has hit a particular city in the world. You will work in 3s and one person must record, one person must interview and another person has to answer the questions. You may swap and have the recorder also answer questions or ask them.
Groups:
You will work with just boys and just girls. We will see who are better reporters, the boys or the girls?
What to include in your report:
The following are things you may want to consider including into your news report:
- Where the natural disaster has hit
- What type of natural disaster it is
- Is it common in these areas
- Why has this natural disaster occurred
- How long has it been affecting the city or region
- The size or how strong the natural disaster is
- How many homes and people have been affected
- How they tried to warn people about the natural disaster before it hit
- Where are the people affected being treated or being kept
- How will the authorities clean up the city and rebuild
- You do not need to include ALL of the listings from above. Your story may want to focus on someone being trapped or rescued due to your natural disaster. However, even if you go with a story like that, you would still need to include some of the answers to the questions above.
Time Limit:
You will have anywhere between 2-5 minutes for your report.
What can you use?
You may draw and use the camera to record those drawing. You can also use whiteboards and markers.
You may go outside.
You cannot borrow equipment from the sport’s room.
What will result in a 1,2,3:
- Not treating equipment with respect.
- Shouting
- Leaving equipment out when it is time to pack up
- Breaking one of the 12 rules.
Presenting Back
Students will be able to present back to the class by using a dongle to show it on the Smart Board
- What do you know about natural disasters? What are natural disasters? (brainstorm, students need to write in their book. 6G sit on the desks and 6W sits on the floor in front of 6G smartboard.
- Before you show the video, tell students you are going to ask the following questions below: Show the video https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dJBS94GVyuo
- Explain why you chose the video you chose. That is, it is from a reliable source (National Geographic), it is not a very long video, it is very specific.
- Get students to write the answer to the following questions and give students enough time to write it down. They do not have to write the questions, just full sentences. The title is Natural Disasters.
- What is a Tsunami?
- How are they formed?
- What destruction occurs when a tsunami hits?
- What are people doing to help detect tsunamis?
- What did you find interesting from that video?
** Ask students to share their answers with a partner. Then get one student to come out the front to share their answers.
4. Put students into groups of 3. They have to be mixed ability. The easiest way to do this is to randomly select 1,2,3 and call them Group 1 for example. Explain to students that they will have to answer the questions below, they will have to do it in their books (every single one of them).
You need to find information from at least one website and one video. You need to include the following:
- the name of the website and video (a major title)
- How you found the website (what you typed into Google)
- Why you felt the website and video was good for this project.
Students cannot do the tsunamis as this one has already been done. They may choose another natural disaster as other groups. The best way to decide is to get students to play scissors, paper, rock.
Type the following if you need help finding the type of natural disaster you want into Google and/or youtube:
- Natural disasters for kids
- list of natural disasters
Discuss with students what some other options are to type into Google or Youtube to help their research.
- The natural disaster we chose is___________________ because___________
- The way our natural disaster is formed is by (give an explanation, it can be in bullet points or as sentences and you may use sketches to help you explain)
- How are they detected (How do scientist know it is coming?). Explain how this happens.
- Do you think this is a good way to detect your natural disaster? If so, why? If not, what could be improved?
- What type of destruction does our natural disaster cause?
- Where does our natural disaster strike more often?
- (Optional) What are other interesting facts or discoveries your group found out.
Finish the lesson off by showing that as science improves our planet becomes safer.
Ask a few groups to come out the front to present back to the class.
Your Task
You need to complete at least one of the options below. Therefore, if you finish early, you can research more and present it back.
How You Will Work
--> In groups of 3, you must select to find out about one or more of the following options.
--> A few groups will be expected to teach the class about what they have learnt. This will be picked randomly.
--> You will be the teacher and explain what you learnt. It cannot be less than 90 seconds. While students are talking, a few students will take down notes on Linoit.
--> If you show a video, it can only be for a minute. You may show images.
Your Options
1) Find out one astronomer who made a significant contribution to understanding the Solar System and write down a biography of that person, focussing heavily on what that astronomer found out about the Solar System. Use the website https://www.bighistoryproject.com/chapters/2#our-solar-system as a starting point.
2) Find out what Aboriginal people used to believe about the Solar System. This could include Dreamtime stories. Try some websites and Youtube.
3) Research about NASA and present back showing what you found out about them.
Options:
- In pairs, watch two videos about the solar system and access two reliable websites.
- Write in your workbooks the answers to the following questions:
- What is the Solar System and what are it’s main features?
- How long does each planet take to orbit around the sun? What is an orbit?
- Using the website below, find out everything you can about the solar system. You will need to write down what you found interesting into your workbooks. You will then be required to create either a small speech, a play, a poster, a Google presentation, an advertisement, a song, an interview with a friend or another way to show what you have learnt. You will also need to explain what is an orbit and really answer the two questions above. As an extension, you may also like to choose your favourite planet and become an expert on that planet and tell us all about it.
Energy Website

1. What is renewable energy?
2. List two Pros (advantages) and two Cons (disadvantages) of renewable energy.
3. What is non-renewable energy?
4. List two Pros (advantages) and two Cons (disadvantages) of non-renewable energy.
5. Give two reasons why we should conserve energy?
6. Choose either Wind, Solar and Geothermal and write down some hot interesting facts about the one you chose. You may choose to write and illustrate this in your Science book, on a poster or on Google presentation or Prezi.
