Choose Your Company Name
Task One

Make up a name for your company. You are allowed to change the name further down the track as you write more about your car and learn more about environmentally friendly cars.

What to Type on Google
Task 2:
Ask students what they would do if they wanted to find out about fuel-efficient/environmentally friendly cars on the internet.

  • where would you go?
  • what would you type?

Ss get into pairs and have to find 1 good website for environmentally friendly cars and one that isn’t good. Ss then share back to the grade and have a discussion.

Discuss concepts like the amount of text, the purpose of the website or video (is it a business promoting their green car as opposed to a government agency), what is the bias?

Create a Logo
Task Three
Your task will be to design your own car logo. Go to the website http://www.designmantic.com/ and have a play around with some of your own logos.
Teachers Instructions Γ  Show images and videos of logos.
Design a logo for your company. You will need to write down the following:
a)     Why your logo looks the way it does.
b)    What does your logo mean?
c)     Why have you chosen the colours?
d)    How does it represent an environmentally friendly car company?

Some people will be expected to give an oral presentation of your LOGO and its meaning.

Writing an Information Report
Task 4
"Write an information report about environmentally friendly cars.

The images below give you some ideas of what you could write about in your information report.

The table below gives you an idea of how you could set it up.

-Use specific technical vocabulary and descriptive language.
-Use third person objective language.
-Determine which tense is appropriate to your report: Present tense: “The platypus is one of -----Australia’s most interesting marsupials.” OR Past tense: “The ancient Egyptians worshipped the Nile River.”
- The language of comparison could be used, eg “compared with”, “smaller than”, “greatest”, “different from”, “like…”
-Your report should be well-organised under headings provided, clearly and neatly presented.
-Check that graphs and diagrams are clearly labelled.
-Proof-read and edit your report.

Make a Poster
Task Five
* Make a group poster showing the advantages and disadvantages of environmentally friendly cars. Teachers will place you in groups and some groups will present back to the class.  Best one wins a Brazilian lolly.

Write an Exposition
Task Six
*Write an exposition persuading your audience why environmentally friendly cars are a good option or why they are a bad option for people to have. It may be presented as a persuasive brochure or just in writing.

Exposition Structure

An exposition text is used to argue a point a view or to persuade the audience to do ?something. An exposition presents one side of an argument, so it is either written for or ?against a topic, not both.

An exposition has 3 main parts:

1. An introductory statement / Statement of position
* Includes the author's point of view which is called the thesis of the argument.
* Can include a preview of the arguments that will follow in the next section.
* A question or emotional statement can be used to gain the audience's attention.

2. A series of arguments to convince the audience with supporting evidence
* Use a new paragraph for each new argument.
* Each paragraph must begin with a topic sentence which introduces the new argument.
* After the topic sentence comes the details that support the argument.

3. A conclusion summing up the arguments
* The author re-states their thesis (point of view).
* Includes a summary of what has been said.
* Provides a recommendation to the reader.

Creating Your Brochure
Before you can begin your brochure, you need to ensure that you have completed the 2 Day Antarctica Journey and what needs to be included in a brochure. This MUST be submitted onto the blog. You will be assessed on writing based on having these activities completed as well as the brochure below.

What do I do when I finish the layout of my brochure?
You take it to your teacher to sign.
What do I do then?
You must write the information into your English books. For example: Day 1: Today you will board the Aurora Australis...
Please just write down the large pieces of information. You do not need to include details such as phone numbers and websites in your English books.
What do I do once I have finished all the information into my English book?
Edit your work and ask a friend to read over it to make sure there are no spelling errors, punctuation errors or grammatical errors.
What do I do once all my work is edited and I am ready to start doing the final draft of my brochure?
You then have to do your final copy on a piece of paper.
How do I go about it?
You will need to get a new piece of paper, you may use textas or crayons as well. You will need to find images out of magazines or the internet at home and print them (teachers will not print from school). The teachers will also try and find Antarctica magazines to help you find images.

Can I work on this project at home?
If you are falling behind then you may, however if you are working at the speed that is expected of you then we would expect that you do the work in class.

What if I cannot get access to a computer?
Either make sure you have completed all the work you need to complete in your book.

- Have I wrote down all the information that will be in my brochure into my English book?
- Have I edited all my work so that when I have a computer, I can easily transfer it?
- Have I finished my 2 Day Antarctica Trip and brochure list in my English book?

If you have done all of this and you still cannot get access to a device, you are encouraged to sit next to someone who is working on their brochure on a computer to see how use the program so you may learn.

Brochure World
Get one of the three brochures and read silently for 15 minutes. Pay close attention to how the pages are laid out. How much information is used? How much visuals/images are used? What are the headlines like?

Flick through and do the following:
1. Write your name on the front of your brochure.
2. Find an itinerary that interests you.
3. Using one coloured pen, highlight or underline 3-6 areas of the itinerary that interests you.
4. Using a different pen or highlighter, underline the days you will be travelling.
5. Circle the map.
6. Underline in a different pen adjectives that are used.
6. a) Circle in RED modes of transport throughout your trip.
7. Rate the picture in terms of 5 stars (5 stars being the best 1 star being the worst). You will rate the picture in terms of how interesting it is and if it makes you want to travel to the destination.
8. Put a square around what is "included" (inclusions) on the trip.
9. Put a little smiley face or a sad face next to the price. A smiley face if you think it is a good and fair price or a sad face if you think it is an expensive price.
10. Write down in a little bubble which continent it is on.
11. Find out what the cost of the tour is in US currency and in Euros.
12. Give your itinerary 3 "Likes" if you recommend people to go to it or "No Likes" if you don't recommend it. Maybe 2 likes if you think it's ok and one like if you don't really recommend it.
13. In your English book, write down what an itinerary or brochure of a location/trip should include. Once you have finished this, add your list to the blog and write how this will help you design an awesome brochure for your trip to Antarctica. Include your business name also.

Go to the website below and then go to the "Brochure" tab. Choose a destination you like and then download the brochure.

Once you have finished, please look at the brochures below. Pay attention to what they have in them. Think about the visuals, how much writing is on each page.
a) Pick a page and write down the main idea.
b) How has the page used visuals. Do you think they are good visuals?
c) How would you have changed the page?
d) Which page is least appealing and why?

Finishing Your Writing Task (see beow)

A few people share while others record how many emotions they had etc

1. Finish your story
2. Underline, circle etc the words or phrases to express emotions, facts etc as outlined on the blog. Using a key or a legend will be very helpful.
3. Edit all your work for capital letters, full stops, commas, things that don't make sense, spelling, adding more detail, including extra details as outlined on the blog.
4. Swap books with a partner and have them check for full stops etc.
5. Go onto the blog and publish your story. Please sign up using your initials only and your class in brackets (F.D 6G)
(talk to Daniella and Jessica if you need any help).

6. Early finishers can help those who have not yet finished.

Helicopter Trip
Extension (and when people finish): Write a diary entry across two days whereby you are travelling by helicopter, landing on Antarctica, seeing animals and packing equipment. You will be staying on land overnight.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UcIux22bLtY (larger, skip to crevasses and end part of ship)

Your Task: In your diary entry, you must include the following:

6-10 emotions that you feel over the two days (e.g. scared being a passenger on the helicopter)
3-5 facts about Antarctica
3-5 facts about an Antarctic animal
2-4 facts about helicopters
5 - 10 pieces of vital equipment that you would need to take (this does not include clothes)

All About Your Antarctica Thing
Draw an outline of an animal that lives in Antarctica eg seal, penguin or an object eg iceberg, glacier and write as much information as you can after researching this’ thing’. This will be put up as a display.

You must research first, write your information in your English books, then draw the image making sure it is large enough to write the information in. This will be displayed as a poster for others to enjoy reading during silent reading time.

So...What did you learn project?
  1. Get into groups of 6.
  2. Collect 2 hexagons each and write down two things you learnt from Chris Olsen yesterday or two things you have learnt about Antarctica so far (this could be from your Science or HSIE research or even from the work you have completed in Guided Reading in your contract or by reading with your teacher).
  3. You are NOT ALLOWED to write things that are identical to other members in your group. Please write a short sentence about two things you have learnt or found interesting.
  4. Get some blue tack and stick your hexagons in the allocated places on the wall so they connect with one another. You will then need to take a picture of it using an I-pad. You may need to borrow an I-pad from another group. Please be patient.
  5. You will then be expected to come out the front and explain what you have learnt (as a group) and why some of the hexagons you have connected go together. You will need to have 2 group members come out, however the teachers will choose one of those group members.
  6. Once this has been complete, the group you borrowed the I-pad from may go to the location where you placed your hexagons and they are able to rearrange your hexagons and make new connections. They will take a picture and justify the changes to the grade.
  7. The group that does this lesson properly and sensibly will receive half an Antarctic TNT each (which is exactly like a normal half a TNT except for the fact that we have now called it an Antarctic half TNT because we want you to be motivated for this subject and because it ties in perfectly with the unit we are studying).
  8. Good luck and let the learning begin.

1. Using a venn diagram compare this to the blueprint of the Auroa Australis.

2. Write a paragraph stating the reasons why a cruise ship is so different to the ship used to go to Antarctica.

3. Answer the question: “What have you learnt about the way images convey information?”

Writing a Diary Entry

Write a diary entry about what you have done today. Remember how Sophie has written her diary entry. She has included facts, emotions, images and different fonts. Try and do the same. You may choose to include a picture or not. It is up to you.

You will be given 15 - 20 minutes to write and will be placed in pairs. After you hear the chime you will swap books, regardless of whether you are finished or not.

  • 1st Chime: Check and edit for spelling, punctuation (capital letters, full stops, commas etc)
  • 2nd Chime: Find three areas, words or sentences that can be improved (perhaps they don't make sense or it could be improved). You will need to circle these areas and discuss how they can be improved.
  • Put an underline on three areas, words or senetnces that you enjoyed and explain to your partner why you enjoyed it.
3rd Chime: Write another paragraph or sentence either at the end of their recount or include 2 sentences.

Early finishers: You will be expected to include an image

Making a Website
Create a website using Wix http://www.wix.com/

It has to be about a product or service (it can be of the company you did your logo on)

Aim to have 3-5 or more page such as About Us, Home Page etc

Have fun...make us want to purchase your product or use your service!

Advertising Tricks

When you finish your assessment, please go to the following websites and do the activities found on each one:

Go onto the website http://pbskids.org/dontbuyit/advertisingtricks/ and have a play at creating a few ads and exploring the website. Try creating your own cereal box. Once you have had a go, do the following:
1. Go onto the Food Advertising Tricks and have a read.

Underneath your persuasive writing, please put the title as "Persuasion in Advertising" and answer the questions below:

1. What did I learn from these videos and the website?
2. Why do restaurants dress up food?
3. Share an experience where you have received a burger that looked nothing like the ad?
4. What have you learnt about persuasion from this lesson?

Like Logos?

What do you know about logos? Watch the videos below to get your head around where to start:

Your task will be to design your own logo. Go to the website http://www.designmantic.com/ and have a play around with some of your own logos.

Your task is to come up with a company. Then think of a name for your company. Then think of a tag line (Google what this is). Then start sketching some logos of your own.

Another Example of Persuasive Writing

Grass Should Not Be Placed on The Upper Playground

Dear Miss Harbrow,

Why pay the extra hundreds of dollars on synthetic grass, when you can be focusing on your school's success? If you think it will prevent injuries, think again. Have you ever gotten a grass burn? It hurts! I definitely believe that artificial grass should not be installed on the upper playground for many reasons including, causing a slippery environment for your students. It will decrease the number of sport options available to play with during recess and lunch, and is it really worth paying thousands of dollars on dull grass? Don’t you want to help your school exceed, then do it by purchasing high tech sports equipment or useful learning material?

Initially, grass should definitely not be placed on the upper playground as it endangers your students to further injuries including severe scratches, grass burns and twisted ankles due to the unstable floor. Research has shown that 91% of children who run on grass will trip and fall whereas only 23% of children running on a stable concrete floor will. Is grass really safer than a smooth concrete floor? My older sister once fell on synthetic grass and still has a scar on her knees to this day.
Do you want children coming to you day after day, week after week whining to you about why they can’t play basketball, netball or handball and other sport in there breaks?

98% of students who attend St Felix enjoy playing and learning how to play new and fun fitness activities and would not be satisfied with the changes made to our school. The majority of people strongly suggest placing artificial grass will be a horrible idea.

Just think, which is more important? Buying a dangerous playing ground for the students of St Felix or buying new learning facilities to give your school a boost in learning. I personally believe that it is more essential for you to purchase higher valued learning materials. There was a news story on a school that got bankrupt as they wasted their precious money on artificial grass and the school shut down. Do you want to take the risk?

To summarise, I highly suggest that installing synthetic grass would be a huge waste of time and money. As a result of installing grass you will create less sporting options for your students. If you had any opportunity to make your school exceed, you would take the risk, right? Don’t forget that research suggests that when wet, fake grass is a danger hazard for your younger student. Then why buy artificial grass when you can be using that money to push your students to their very best in their class by purchasing more educational products.
