  1. Day One:
Today I was so excited! We went to board a helicopter from the ship to go to Antarctica! I couldn’t wait, I was actually going to walk on the coldest, windiest and driest place on Earth! Around 1pm, dad and I made our way to the Helideck. The Helideck is the place where helicopters take off and land on a ship. When we got to the Helideck, a friendly looking man took our bags and placed them near the back. Dad got on first, I went after. The big propellers kind of scared me. After everyone got on and was settled, we took off. The view was amazing! I saw massive icebergs and tall snowy mountains. I also some crevasses. I’ve always had the fear of falling in one.

    Day Two:
I was so excited! We had finally landed! I quickly climbed out of the helicopter, the sound of the propellers was so irritating. But I was still so happy to finally be here! My dad helped me climb out and take my first few steps, the ice was so slippery! Dad took me to our base so I could unpack my clothes, some water I brought, a pickaxe, a spare tent, snow goggles and my stock. Then we put some more layers on and went outside. I also got to wear crampons, those boots that have spikes at the bottom. Dad and I walked around, I was so cold! We saw so many amazing animals! There were Skuas, Gentoo Penguins, Macaroni Penguins, even a Leopard Seal! However, the Chinstrap Penguin was my favourite. I thought the black line across their face was so cute! And watching them dive in and out of the water with krill in their mouths was so cool! I learnt they weigh about 3 to 6kg. After a long day of exploring the amazing Antarctic Region, dad and I went back to our base and got our bags. Then we boarded the helicopter and flew back to our ship. I was very exhausted yet very fascinated from what I saw in Antarctica. This was an unforgettable experience.

  2. Day 1

I was so excited! I couldn’t contain myself! I boarded the white helicopter, ready to fly to Antarctica. I finally wouldn’t get seasick from the motion on the boat. I sat on a red seat along with five other people, two being my friends Belle and Ally. It was extremely crowded due to the vital equipment such as crampons ( spike shoes), food, water, rope pickaxes and a spare tent. Eventually, the helicopter propeller started to move and make loud noises. Before I knew it, we were lifted off the ground. We flew over the blue ocean filled with packed ice. I began to feel nauseous looking down. We were so high!I was also nervous because the helicopter could crash. In the horizon, I could see the white desert Antarctica. I then felt us descending to the snowy ground. We landed with a “thump” which made me jump. I stepped off the helicopter onto the white snow as the cold wind hit my face. I was in layers of clothes and looked chubby. A man lead us to our hut (Mawson’s station) which was where we were staying. Throughout the journey, I could see Adelie penguins which were about 70 centimetres waddling across the snow. I heard a loud roar coming from a elephant seal that was about 6 metres lying on a mountain of snow. When we arrived at the hut, I felt tired from the journey. The coldest place on Earth was even colder that I thought. The group leader told us some rules that I didn’t care about, so I went to explore. The snow was so white! In the distance, I could see some emperor penguins which is the tallest species of penguins in Antarctica. They looked like they were wearing tuxedos. I ran towards them but they waddled away. Eventually, I arrived back at the station and was told to stay because I got sick. We played a game of cards and was told I had to go back to the ship tomorrow.

    Day 2
This morning, I woke up as sick as a dog and extremely tired. The group leader went with me back to the helicopter to go back to the ship. I once again sat on a red seat in the big helicopter. Eventually, we ascended into the sky and I could see massive crevasses. The ocean also had spotty leopard seals in it along with huge icebergs. When we landed, I walked to my cabin very tired and went to sleep.

    Day 16
I was overly excited to finally go and step a foot on Antarctica, I thought that we were using a rubber boat but nope, we were using a helicopter. As we took off, I slowly became terrified, I never been on a helicopter before.
At least we got to fly near this amazing iceberg shaped like a cave, we took a few pics. The angry wind was pushing the helicopter around, why would it? I almost vomited and fell off! It was NOT a great experience, especially the noise the helicopter makes, it sounds like a gun fight in World War 2, it’s like headaches being soldiers attacking me, it was extremely annoying. At last we get to finally put a foot on Antarctica, it took forever! They had to check for crevasses before landing. I had to vomit when I stepped on Antarctica because of me staying in the air for 20 minutes. Argh! I could also feel how cold Antarctica is, it’s freezing. For the rest of the tiring and boring day. Barry, he keeps bragging about how Antarctica is the coldest, windiest and driest place on Earth, huh…..he’s so annoying.
    Day 17
Yay, we get to see animals in the wildlife of Antarctica. I rushed down to the dining area to eat my delicious ham and egg breakfast. I was too excited that I made myself go toilet. We saw the emperor penguins first, I was amazed of the facts Barry told me, emperor penguins can swim for 18 minutes with a depth of 535 m, WOW! We spent probably an hour of watching animals, did you know seals are scary, especially leopard seals which can grow to 3 metres tall. After a watching penguins diving into the water for food, we went sliding on rocks while trying to stand. Barry was always better than me at everything, even eating, so embarrassing. 2 hours after play on small hills, the siren went off. We were told to grab vital equipment which are pickaxes, crampons for our boots, ropes, goggles and stocks. I had high hopes for more sliding, it was extremely fun. I was so mad to hear that the siren wa just a drill, why would they do that? After a few more hours of fun, we had to leave.I was awfully excited to see another iceberg. I told Barry that my worst part of this trip is vomiting. That green gooey yucks. After this amazing trip all I wanted to do was have a nice peaceful sleep.

  5. Day 1:
UHHHH!! I was so tired it felt like my eyes were going to pop out . We were on the helicopter on the way to Antarctica the helicopter was so far from the ground i was scared incase fall down . The noise of the helicopter was so loud and annoying , the helicopter was so big and heaps of people could fit inside . We arrived in Antarctica , you would not believe how cold it was it was like i was in a massive freezer , we went to put down our bags when there was a big RRR!!! behind me OOHH!!! how cute it was an elephant seal , gosh did you know they have one big nose and there bodys are so big . The day was going so fast and it was already 8.30pm and i was about to fall asleep when the elephant seal was making the RRR!!! sound again.
    Day 2:
As i woke i felt so sick my nose was running , my lips were dry and i had a stomach ache . I got out of my comfy bed and went to VS my mate in a game of cards . Well after a while we went to eat some ice-cream but it felt like my tongue was going to crack , i went to dress up in some extremely warm clothes , so i put on some gloves , scarfs , thermal wear , and some spiked boots so that way i will not slip . As we went to explore Antarctica whoops! i nearly fell in a crevasse , they are massive holes in the ground that you can die from , the feeling of the ice was so cold that it was going through my gloves . We saw heaps of penguins , seals and birds but it was time to go . We went back onto the loud helicopter and landed onto the helideck WOW that was an amazing adventure .

  6. Day One:
I was so excited but nervous at the same time because I was about to get on a helicopter to go to Antarctica. The helicopter could fit 4 people and was about 3.4m long. Antarctica is the coldest, driest and windiest place on Earth. As I was on the very loud helicopter, leaving the ship, I realised that the ship was surrounded by huge icebergs. Some of the equipments that I brought with me was a pick-axe, spiked shoes, a rope, a stock, food and water. After about 20 minutes we landed on Antarctica. I was feeling very cold that I couldn’t stop shivering, and I was very tired that I went to sleep.

    Day two:
When I woke up this morning I was so tired and exhausted. But as I turned around I saw a very cute Chinstrap Penguin. Did you know that they weigh about 3 to 6kg? Later on the day I decided to explore Antarctica when I saw a seal. I was terrified! My heart was pounding so fast because I thought it was a Leopard Seal that can grow up to three meters tall. But then I realised that it was a Weddell Seal. So we kept on walking in the freezing, cold weather. On the way back to the tent, you wouldn’t believe what we saw! We saw a baby and a mother Emperor Penguin and the mother was approximately 1.5 meters tall. In the evening , it was time to go back on the helicopter to fly back to the ship. As we were on the helicopter we saw massive crevices. Finally we landed going straight down on the helideck. Wow, I had an amazing two days!

  8. Day 14
Finally! I was so excited we were finally here.Antarctica is so close.I was a little scared because we had to take a helicopter to Antarctica.Nothing was going to stop me.We were landing on Antarctica.I had the biggest smile ever!I was so happy. We finally landed.I brought food, water,a tent, some gloves and a medical kit.We saw an Emperor penguin which is the tallest penguin ever,I also saw an elephant seal which is the biggest seal ever.It made me so scared.Isaw one penguin with fur all around it,but it was really an Emperor penguin in its teen years.I found out why Antarctica was called the home of the wind.It was so windy, dry and cold.It became night,Iwas awfully tired.

    Day 15
Urghh! We had to leave today.I was really mad,so I made the most of my day.I played with the penguins and I had so much fun.A few hours before we left my dad told me to start getting packed because we were leaving soon.I grabbed my stuff but the penguins started following me.I asked my dad if after I finish packing I could play with the penguins. It was time to leave, the penguins went back to their parents.I got in the helicopter. While we were taking off,the helicopter sounded so loud,I could barely here myself think.I told my dad I was so sad that we had to leave that quick. While we flew to the ship the helicopter was going so fast. Finally we landed on the ship and we headed back home.

  9. Day 1

Today I was so excited! I was going to go to Antarctica by helicopter today at 4pm. When it was 4pm, we left the ship on the helicopter. The helicopter noise was so loud, I got a headache. When we got there, I saw penguins, seals, crevasses and even bases. It was extremely cold. I needed spike boots, ropes, tent, water and food. I touched the snow, it was very cold. My hand were shaking. Then at 7pm I went to sleep.

    Day 2

I was even more excited the second day. I needed snow boots so I could grip on the snow. I was holding tightly on the rope so I didn’t get lost. I even saw penguins sliding on the snow and seals laying on the ice. Then we went back in the helicopter at 7pm. Wow, what a 2 days I have had.

  10. Day 1
Today's the day! Today's the day where I leave this bumpy, bruise factory of a ice breaker and board a helicopter! I was jumping around like crazy, unable to keep still. 3..2..1..The deafening roar of the helicopter approached the ship and soon the green and yellow aircraft landed on the heli deck. Finally! I quickly packed a few essentials like a pair crampon (spiked boots), a wool beanie, few snacks, water bottles, a pick axe and a length of rope. I ran like lightning for the small, cramped helicopter, dived into the opening, put on the earphones and strapped on the seatbelts. As it ascending, the ship which seemed gigantic on land, was soon almost invisible in the great Pacific Ocean like a pin in a haystack. The breath taking and blinding white of the icy lands of Antarctica, right at the bottom of the earth, lead my attention away from the disturbing and irritating noise of the helicopter. Sadly, the helicopter was very crowded and I was squashed into this heck of a human ball. Suddenly, breaking my day dream, a voice came on top of the swishing propellers ( must’ve been one powerful lung). But then I realised it was only the pilot speaking into the headset. After 10 memorable minutes, we land gently onto a white plain (we chose a plain so the helicopter doesn’t hit anything). I took a step onto the soft powdery snow of the world’s coldest place and then realised that we landed about 40 m from a cliff. Quickly putting on dangerously looking crampons, I trudged towards the high ground and looked down. Absolutely spellbound by the towering, aqua waves thundering and attacking the solid ice by sight, I could do nothing but watch. After an exhausting afternoon of setting up our shelter, we had some baked beans and hot soup, we settled in and…………

    Day 2
Psssh I. Didn’t. Fall. Asleep. While. Writing…. Today we trekked through the thick, hill-like snow to find poo for research. HEY! HEY! It’s not easy! Who’d wanna spend an once in a lifetime trip to Antarctica digging up frozen poop?! (no offence scientists) Well, sucks being me. But luckily, some animals made it up. I saw with my own eyes two Skuas attacking a Gentoo penguin for its egg! The fight was thrilling, with two 53cm Skuas with a wingspan of 135cm, pecking fiercely at the 71cm male Gentoo and both opposing sides persisting. Unfortunately , after several cuts and drips of blood on the Gentoo’s smooth coat , the egg was gone, taken by those chocolate-coloured Skuas. Well, guess this is life. But on a happier note, we found many useful info on dung…yay. Na, the happy note was actually that I saw a brown, fuzzy, fat penguin (I think it was a penguin anyway) waddling to and fro between rocks. OH MEH GAWD! SOO FAT! After arduous 10 mins of continuous poo-searching, we came to a halt near a rookery (group) of Macaroni penguins (yummm, macaroni) huddling together. Scientific name: Eudyptes Chrysolophus ( yes I got it right!) and they are crested. I like to call them Julia Caesar penguins because their crests look like the crowns back in ancient Rome. Sadly, time passed in the blink of an eye and we had to pack and fly back to the ship, accompanied by 3 sacks of animal waste (lame). Haaa…..that was AWESOME, except the the poop part, but the rest was just AWESOME!

  11. Helicopter Trip

Day 1 Matthew Scott - 8 year old

    Dear Diary,

Last night waves of water gushed onto the ship and pack ice scraped against the side. I couldn't sleep because I was so excited, my dad told me that we were going to Mount Erebus the next morning.

    Day 2

Today when I woke up I was so tired but at the same time I was excited because we were going to Mount Erebus. Mount Erebus is an active volcano in Antarctica. When I ate and got dressed we went onto the helideck. A helideck is where helicopters land on a ship. When the helicopter landed we got onto it. At first I was scared but when it took off I realised, there's nothing to be scared about. In the sky Antarctica looks like a white beach. Antarctica is called "home of the wind" because it is the windiest and driest place on earth. When we landed at our base camp we put our belongings and started walking to Mount Erebus. The equipment that we took was crampons, water bottles, food, a stock and a compass so we know which way to go. As we were walking I spotted a 68 centimetre chinstrap penguin with a krill in it's mouth. When we got to Mount Erebus I collected a few rocks and as I was collecting rocks I saw a seal and I was so scared because I thought it was a leopard seal, but then I realised that it was a Weddell seal. Did you know that Weddell seals can grow up to 10 ft that's taller than me. That evening we went back to our base camp to collect our stuff and we got back on to the helicopter. From above Antarctica looks so big. Antarctica is 40,000,000 km2. When we landed back on the helideck I ate and went to sleep. Today was an extraordinary day and I got to experience different kind of animals in Antarctica.

  14. Day 1:
WOW!!! I was super excited to go to the coldest place on earth, Antarctica. We had gotten on to the helicopter. I was shocked and amazed with the size of it, a staggering 9 metres by 4 metres! We had brung our crampons, ropes, food, water, cameras and other vital equipment. I couldn’t wait to step on that large 14,000,000 km2 of ice cold land. As we landed, I felt my heart pounding.I was super scared we would fall through the ice we landed on.
After we landed, we started walking around, looking at views and buildings. I was stunned with how cold it was! We saw another helicopter land. I was amazed with how fast the two blades spun, and at the amazing speed it travelled at. Dad said it was flying at about 187 km an hour!!! We then walked to our hut and unpacked. We left our pick axe,First aid kit, and POA in our bags. We then played with penguins and other animals. Did you know some are aquatic, sme can grow up to 1.8m and they are flightless. Later on, we went to our hut and went to sleep!

    Day 2:
I woke up at 4 am to start the day. I put on my big, puffy, annoying, stupid clothes and walked to the helicopter landing area. My friend Kaan was landing in Antarctica for 3 whole days… LUCKY! As he got out, he ran to hug me, but I sidestepped him and he fell face first into the floor! I then jumped on him and squashed him like a balloon!
The next 14 hours were awesome! We went to amazing places that had games, parties and loads of junk food. We got to eat KFC, the best food ever! I had a large potato and gravy, chicken popcorn, a small chips and 2 buns. Obviously, I was starving!!! Soon after we all went on a helicopter ride around Antarctica. We landed near Mawson's hut, and we went to it. It was so cool, even though half of it was covered in snow!
Kaan and I then played in the snow. We built snowman's, then jumped on them, wrestled around, and had n awesome snowball fight while our dads bought coffee to “stay awake”!
Afterwards, we went back to our hut, packed up and got ready to leave. Half an hour later my dad and I were in the helicopter, flying back to Australia, waving goodbye to Kaan and his dad. Antarctica was amazing, the views, the snow, the friends, and the food!!! This, was truly unforgettable.

    Day 17:

    Dear Diary

Last night was rough, I couldn’t sleep. Waves were bashing into the ship and pack ice was scratching against the ship. I felt so tired but at the time very VERY excited! Daddy told me we were going to arrive at the commonwealth bank very soon.

After about 25 minutes we could see the white landscape of the snow in contrast to the blue water. I felt like jumping off the ship, but I probably just freeze. My friends, Jesse and Melanie are going on a rubber boat to get to Antarctica. I wish they went with me because I was going on a helicopter! Since Daddy was the Captain, I got to go on the helicopter.

I was walking to the helideck with my favourite scientist, Professor Plum. ( If you are wondering why I didn’t say helipad because a helideck is for a ship and a helipad is for land ) Daddy couldn’t come because he had to stay and look after the ship. I was getting butterflies in my stomach but I couldn’t help getting excited. I clutched my camera close to me as I climbed onto the helicopter.

Sitting on the helicopter, I started to get a earache from the deafening sound of the helicopter propellor. As we got higher into the air, the view was AMAZING!!!! From the window I could see and abundant of elephant seals. From such a great height they looked like cat litter. The helicopter. Then then the helicopter flew next to a flock of Skuas, I think we got so close we almost he them.

After about half an hour, we finally reached inland. Flying over the pristine white snow, I see massive crevasses. Crevasses are gigantic cracks in the snow that are formed by slowing moving glaciers moving apart.

We finally landed at the Scott base, there I met my supervisor for the two days I was staying at Antarctica before I go back to the Aurora Australis.. Her name was Ivy Linger. She told me she would take me on a short hike around the area. I went to go change into Antarctica - worthy clothing. I put on my thermal wear ( skins ) , wool jumper, Gore Tex Jacket, waterproof pants, very thick socks, ski boots, mittens, ski gloves, beanie, goggles and balaclava. A balaclava is a headgear, it’s like a beanie but it covers your face. I almost forgot my crampons. Crampons are metal plates with spikes that you attach to you boots to prevent you from slipping on the ice.

We trekked around the base, explored the snow and rocks, built a snow castle and had a snowball fight.

By 7:30pm, I was EXHAUSTED!!!! We walked back to the base to have dinner. I was so tired, I missed Dinner and head straight to bed.

    Day 16:

    Dear Diary,

It was my last day at Antarctica. I felt so sad to leave Antarctica already. I decided to use my time well. Ivy and I climbed a mountain, Mount Pageant. We chose this mountain because it was a pretty small mountain. Its height was 2,935m. On my way out of the base, I grabbed my stock, rope, harness, pickaxe and camera.

As we climbed the mountain, we saw a flock of Emperor Penguins. When we came up close, in the middle of the flock was a small brown fluffy penguin. Ivy told me it was a baby Emperor Penguin. When Emperor Penguins are babies they have a fluffy coat. Ivy said they were called Gangsta Penguins. When they reach adulthood, their fluffy coat comes off and they become a gorgeous adult Emperor Penguin.

Around noon, I was so tired. We decided to have a break near some elephant seals. I remembered, at school, my teacher told me that elephant seals could weigh up to 4 tonnes and grow up to 6 metres.

After about half an hour later, we finally reached the summit!!!! I planted my flag. I wanted to call it Mount Phoebe, but too bad it already had a name, Mount Pageant.

Back at the base, Ivy taught me all about Antarctica. I learnt that 98% of Antarctica is covered in snow and ice. Also, 90% of an iceberg is underwater, so only 10% is above the water.

    Day 17:

It was time to go back to the Aurora Australis. It was so upsetting to leave Antarctica. But it was time to go. Bye, Bye Antarctica!!! See you soon!!!!

  17. Day 1:
Today started with me feeling sick, really sick. The ship was bobbing up and down viciously. Despite all the sickness I knew today was going to be an exciting day, it was the day we were going to go to Antarctica. After many long months of sailing, we were actually going to step foot on Antarctica; I was so excited.I quickly jumped out of my bed, got dressed and packed my equipment. I packet a pickaxe, crampons, rope and an stock.I was very excited when the big bright orange helicopter landed on the helideck. The helicopter was very loud, I quickly jumped onto the helicopter and put my headphones on.The helicopter lifted off the helideck slowly and off we were. As we were traveling in the helicopter I saw massive crevasses, huge mountains and many seals on the coast line. After about 10 minutes we were in Antarctica.
    Day 2:
It was hard to sleep last night because of the freezing temperatures and the gusting winds.I had to sleep in a wooden bunk in the cabin, it was hard and not comfortable. When I got out of bed I went outside to have breakfast at cabin 15. When I got outside I meet Sophie and John at the entrance. In Antarctica there are very heavy blizzards, did you know Antarctica is called a dessert. After breakfast we went out side to explore the wildlife. We saw many Weddel seals, Elephant seals ,Leopard seals, Emperor Penguins and Macaroni Penguins. Did you know a Leopard Seal can live from 12 to 15 years. At the end of the second day on Antarctica we went home. The large orange helicopter was waiting outside my cabin.

  19. Day 6:
This morning I was so happy and excited because I was going onto a helicopter to Antarctica. As the helicopter was landing I saw a lot of penguins including the tall Emperor Penguin. While I was on the big black helicopter all that I could hear was the loud noisy sound of the helicopter. When we landed on Antarctica, I felt really sea sick and dizzy. My dad and I were walking to the base however I saw many cracks in the ice. My dad told me that it was called crevices. Once we were at the base I was unpacking all my equipment including spare gloves, rubber boats, water, food, sleeping bags, a stock and a pick axe. As the sun died down my dad and I snuggled into our soft, warm sleeping bags.

    Day 7:
In the morning, my dad and I were up really early. As we were having breakfast, I could see and Elephant Seal. The Elephant Seal was grey and was as tall as a 10 storey building. After we had breakfast, I was so cold I couldn’t even walk! My dad told me that Antarctica is a really dry and cold place to be. Once my dad and I left the base, my dad told me that we were going to dig the ice. While we were walking, I saw an Emperor Penguin. Did you know that the Emperor Penguin can weigh up to 40kg and are the tallest of all penguins. Once my dad and I finished digging the ice, the big black noisy helicopter landed next to us. As I was climbing aboard the helicopter I saw massive shing white icebergs. While the helicopter was flying really high I could see the helideck from our ship. A helideck is like a helipad but on a ship. Once the helicopter landed on the helideck I felt so relieved but also so happy. Wow! My two days on Antarctica were amazing!

  20. ▬▬▬▬ஜ۩۞۩ஜ▬▬▬▬ Day One: ▬▬▬▬ஜ۩۞۩ஜ▬▬▬▬
A furious blizzard was raging across the dry Antarctic plains. The tedious walk from our icebreaker ship was the worst five minutes of my life. I managed to reach to our vivid orange helicopter. Then we huddled up in the cockpit and we were beginning to fly!

The pilot fidgeted with various switches and buttons atop the roof. The helicopter was slowly making it’s way up the blizzard. I was so excited. The blizzard was blowing from Mawson’s Hut which was the settlement for Mawson and his explorers. After the blizzard calmed down we managed to hover over Antarctica more rapidly.

Soon after we landed at the helipad on the Antarctic Dome Base near Mt. Erebus.
The moment i stepped foot in, a surge of warm air flushed into my face. The was so relaxing.
I found out that the heat was created by heaters as well as layers of thick sponge that insulates the Dome Base. I unpacked my bag and settled into bed.

That night i had a dream about meeting penguins. They were Adelie Penguins, Pygoscelis Adeliae. They were fluffy and very adorable. Adelie penguins live on the Antarctic continent and on many small, surrounding coastal islands. They spend the winter offshore in the seas surrounding the Antarctic pack ice.

    ▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬ஜ ۩۞۩ ஜ▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬
    Day Two:
The moment i woke up the sun was rising but it was vague to me from my bedside window due to snow that had fallen during the night and had attached itself to the window. My trip was nearly beginning so i packed my gear: a stock, pickaxe, crampons, comfy wool beanie and layers of thick clothes with gore-tex. I went outside with a group of enticed explorers who were prepared for this perilous journey.

After walking a few hundred metres we encountered a seal, just a normal elephant seal, it seemed from a distance. So i decided to approach it and pat it. When i approached it, it came to show it was an LEOPARD SEAL!!! My heart began to beat rapidly with fear. One of the scientists then told me that they had a bigger appetite for fish and penguins rather than humans. Leopard seals are classified as carnivores.

After venturing further we met some emperor penguins waddling on the deserted ice plains.
They were one of the many species that dwelt in the almost inhospitable continent of Antarctica. Then we slowly walked back to the icebreaker thinking about the wildlife we’d seen.

Farewell Antarctica, For Now. . .

    Day One

Today I started getting my bags,to get ready to go on the helicopter. When I got on the helicopter I started freaking out before it started flying. When it was in the air I stayed calm and looked around.I could hear the sound of the water in Antarctica and I could see really tall icebergs and all white.I could hear deafening sounds from the helicopter. After about 10 minutes the helicopter landed and I got out. When I got out I was wearing lots of clothes to keep me warm.I started walking around as I was walking I saw penguins.I could see an Emperor penguin, adelie penguin, macaroni penguin and a king penguin. When I went to the emperor penguin it started chasing me I was running so fast I lost it.

    Day Two
The next morning I woke up at 6:00 and went for another walk as I was walking I had a stock to check for crevices.Anyway when I was walking I saw a seal in my my head I was thinking what kind of seal it was, it might of been a leopard seal or a weddell seal so I went up to it it was so tall, straight away I knew it was a leopard seal.So I started running for my life as I was running I lost it and I stopped I heard a crack.I moved slowly and manegd to move away from the crack. After all that happend I went back to the helicopter frighted and scared but I hold it and we flew back to the ship.It was a crazy day.

  23. Day 1:
My heart was beating so fast I couldn’t feel it! That was because I was going to Antarctica. As the pilot called my name I grabbed my bags and quickly walked out of my room. As nervous and excited I felt, I slowly boarded the helicopter. During the trip I thought I was going to become deaf because of it’s sound. However, besides that the view was amazing, apart from the fact I was sick. Finally landing on Antarctica I felt a big gush of wind hit my face. Walking on the driest and windiest place on earth gave me such a good feeling! As I was walking to my base I suddenly heard a large moan. Cautiously I turned around and witnessed a large pack of elephant seals. I felt a big chill down my spine hoping they wouldn’t be able to see me. When I arrived at my base I unpacked my bags and got all my equipment for the next day, I packed some ropes, a pickaxe, stocks, crampons and an icebreaker. Those equipment were for my hike.

    Day 2:
Waking up that next morning I was excited, yet sad. Excited that I was going on a hike, but sad because it was my last day at Antarctica. I got up, got changed and took my equipment that I packed on the previous day. When we began our hike we got to see a glimpse of the emperor penguin, they seemed to be as tall as me! The view that we saw of Antarctica was very beautiful, it seemed so white I felt like walking on paper. Suddenly, a blizzard hit us, luckily I wore my crampons I was on the urge to take them off ( they’re really uncomfortable). When the blizzard stopped we decided to go back home, just in case of another blizzard. On our way back we saw that the water seemed quite red, then we realized that it was a large school of krill, it was so large it was fit for three whales. When we reached our base we had to pack, the helicopters fan blew away some snow which made it look like a cloud surrounding me. My time at Antarctica was over, just for now.

  24. Day7 Date:6.6.2006 Saturday

Dear diary,Today was the day that we were going to arrive in Antarctica! I felt nervous, scared and on the other hand excited. There were icebergs everywhere and Antarctica is the windiest and driest place on Earth! The ship couldn’t break the ice so we had to use the helicopter tomorrow to go to Antarctica.

On the trip we brought a picaxe, food, water,a rope,a stock,a rubber boat, and hiking gear.

    Day 8 Date:7.6.2006 Sunday

As we hopped on to the helicopter, the helicopter is about 2-3 metres long. I felt scared, cold and perplexed because there were so many crevices! The helicopter was travelling so fast that I was shocked which leaded me not to catch my breath. The noise of the ship was so noisy that I felt really annoyed which caused my ears to to hurt.

    15 minutes later…………

When we arrived in Antarctica we first saw some Emperor penguins walking. The Emperor Penguins are the tallest penguins and are the cousins of the King Penguin. Also Did you know that you can see penguin droppings from outer space? We were travelling and exploring,I nearly fell into a crevice! I was so devastated ,so we decided to return on the ship. The helideck landed on the helideck on the ship.I was really relieved that we were back on the Aurora Australis.

  25. Day 2:
I couldn't hold my excitement this morning (even if the mighty waves caused me to become seasick). Today was the day that I would arrive on the coldest, windiest, driest place on Earth, ANTARCTICA (well, if the weather holds up)! As the afternoon rolled in, out of the porthole in my cabin, I could just make out the horizon. My mother (botanist and scientist) told me that we had to board the helicopter as the weather was changing. So I quickly changed into my five layers of clothes, my arctic boots and packed my backpack. Inside of it I had placed a pair of crampons, a beanie as well as a scarf, a life jacket, a pick axe and a rope, a sleeping bag and a few snacks. After my mother grabbed the inflatable rubber life boat we headed to the helideck above us. On the way I had to be sure to not slip on the deck. When I reached the Salvation-360, the pilot handed me a pair of headphones and suddenly the roar of the helicopter slowly faded away. I boarded the helicopter and it zoomed off as if it was like lightning. I was astonished to see a Winter Wonderland on Antarctica even if it was Summer (the research is a lot easier to work with in the Summer). As I stepped onto the ice I could feel a cold gush of air blow across my face. When we hiked to our campsite we started to set up camp but we were just so amazed by the wildlife that Antarctica inhabited, that it took all night to set up camp. After we had finally finished, I snuggled into my sleeping bag and gently closed my eyes until......

    Day 3:
As I opened my tent and climbed out, I came the faces of a group of Emperor penguins huddled together. They were quite big and stood to around my shoulder. I wanted to take a long glance at these majestic creatures but we had to trek to Mawson's hut. By the time we reached the hut, it was 12 o'clock. As we entered the hut, all that was there were broken pieces of timber, some cupboards, rotten food and berths, which are small bunk beds. It looked really old and scary but I was just amazed that it was durable enough to stand for over one hundred years. As I stepped out of the hut, some Adelie penguins circled around me. They were so small and I wanted to give them a big cuddle but there was a policy which enforced me to stay a safe distance from Antarctica's wildlife. After our trip to Mawson's hut, we headed to the edge of Antarctica where my mother blew up our inflatable life boat. As I stepped onto the rubber boat, I waved goodbye to Antarctica. When we had reached the icebreaker, we climbed up the ladder and we went to the mess (dining room in the Aurora Australis) to have some dinner (it was just some typical Aussie food). Then, with our full stomachs we carried ourselves to our cabin, where I looked out to Antarctica and waved my last farewell.

  26. Day 5:
I was so excited that could hardly wait! But what i hated was the hard rocks and the waves. I was ready to go off the boat into the grey, medium size helicopter. I grabbed my bags and inside were crampons, rope, a pickaxe, goggles, stock poles, skis, water and some non-perishable food.

After a minute or so, i went outside the massive, white and black boat. It was so windy that my hair was blowing all over my face. I finally reached the helideck where the grey, medium, size helicopter was parked. I went in the helicopter that was 4.5metres in length and 2.5 metres in height. While i was sitting, a pilot called "Jeff" said to me wear ear muffs. The helicopter flew around Antarctica and I saw penguins tall and short. They were black and white and had pale pink feet. Did you know when adult penguins stand they are about 40cm tall and weigh a kilo? Anyway, the helicopter noise was going brr brr and my ears felt like they were going to explode. When the pilot reached the helideck, I was so tired and exhausted, I went to bed even though it was 7:30pm.

    Day 6:
I woke up in the morning about 8:30am feeling so drowsy that I could still hear the helicopter noise in my imagination. I couldn't believe that I was in Antarctica that is the coldest, windiest and driest place on earth. I wore my big, puffy fleas jacket, a skivi, a singlet, skins, my snow pants on top, a scarf, thick socks and two pairs of gloves.
I walked to the helicopter and I saw a leopard seal. My mum always called them sea leopard because it was another word for them and because of their appearance (spots).
I hopped into the helicopter ready to go back to the enormous ship. I was a bit upset and sad because I didn't want to leave Antarctica, but that was it. Anyway the helicopter landed back on the ship and that was the end of the trip. Oh, what a lovely and fun two days I had.

  27. Dear Diary 7-5,2001

    Day 1

I have been to a helicopter because there was too much thick ice for the boat to break through. On my way I had supplied a pick axe, food, water, rope, spiked shoes and a stock to help me with my adventure. The helicopter was really terrible since there was only me and the pilot. I had to occupy myself, with playing cards.

    Day 2

On Antarctica, it was really cold and it was like ice had hit me. But it actually did, I had looked at a penguin, it looked like one of the those emperor penguins it was, did you know a emperor penguin is the heaviest and tallest penguin in the world. When I was in the shelter I vomited, gross! I had to sleep there for the night. The trip is nearly over. I move off the island and go to the helicopter. I move to the boat landing on the helipad finally! What an amazing 2 days.

  30. Day 1
Today, I woke up really excited because I will be walking on Antarctica. The way I’m going there is by using helicopter to travel from the ship and back. I ran cautiously onto the helideck where the metallic silver helicopter was landed. My journey was about to start from this moment. I took all the essentials i needed. Food, water, sunglasses, sunscreen, crampons (spiked-shoes), pickaxe and a rope. As I boarded the helicopter, the pilot gave me a smile. Then he started the engine. The propeller started moving and then the helicopter was off. The trip was was around 15 minutes. When the helicopter landed, a breeze of cold air blasted on my face like if there was a fan in front of me. I walked around and spotted an Emperor Penguin. Did you know the Emperor Penguin is the largest penguin out of the 17 species. They could grow up to 1.15m and weigh 40kg. It’s lifespan is usually 20 years in the wild. As I travelled a bit further, I spotted the base. It was the a green coloured base with blue stripes. Inside it, there was a living room, a kitchen and a few bedrooms. It was cozy and warm inside. There was a fireplace to keep everyone inside warm. Did you know Antarctica is the windiest and coldest on Earth? There is hardly any rainfall making Antarctica a desert.

    Day 2
I woke up tired today because I couldn’t sleep last night because there was a loud blizzard. I had breakfast and found Emperor Penguins, Chinstrap Penguins and the Adelie Penguins waddling around the base. I explored around Antarctica to enjoy myself. There was a lot to see. Icebergs breaking off glaciers, elephant seals, penguins diving into the freezing cold water. Then it was time to go. The helicopter landed back on Antarctica and I boarded it.
The pilot this time flew the helicopter faster. It was going at 500 km an hour. I thought my life will end if he flew the plane like this. I didn’t die. He was a professional pilot. He landed the helicopter right on the helideck in one piece. Even though I had to go, I would remember this experience.

  31. Day 1:
I was so excited, I could hardly wait. Besides all the rock and rolling waves, I felt great! I was just about to ride on a helicopter that as waiting on a helideck. This was it. I was finally going to the land Antarctica. When I was on the steel, grey helicopter, i saw lots of penguins, tall and short. I felt like I was about to vomit when we flew over the deep crevasses. We all had to wear all sorts of clothing in Antarctica such as crampons so that the spikes could dig with the ice and that wouldn’t make me fly with the wind. We all saw amazing things over the vast, ice land that is known as Antarctica. As soon as the time hit 6:00pm, we jumped back into the helicopter. The time to reach the boat was about 15 minutes. When we landed on the helideck I was so tired I went to sleep, even though it was only 6:15pm.

    Day 2:
I was even more excited than I was yesterday. We hopped in once again into the helicopter. Today we had to travel extra fast at an extra speed because it was so windy. That made me feel extra sick, even more than yesterday. I guess that’s why they call Antarctica the windiest place on Earth. The crampons worked great yesterday but at the time we needed more equipment like goggles, stock poles, skis for slopes, a bit of food, a pickaxe and some rope(in case of emergencies). When we headed to the coastline I saw lots of marine animals. I even saw a Leopard Seal. My dad calls them sea Leopards because that’s another name for them. They have the name(sea leopard)because of their appearance(spots). We all headed back to the helicopter because it was 10 minutes to dark. I was a bit upset that my trip in the helicopter were over, but at least I still got to adventure in Antarctica. What a great 2 days it has been.

  32. Day 1
I am so excited today because I am going on a two passenger helicopter to Antarctica. I have never been on one before. The helicopter was ready to take off. I got in the helicopter with my Dad and myself. The sound of the helicopter was deafening it’s the loudest thing I have ever heard in my life. When we are flying, I saw enormous icebergs. We landed on the widest, driest and coldest place on earth, Antarctica. I was so happy to be on Antarctica. When I was on land, I felt freezing wind on my face. We had two tents we put up straight away but I could hear a loud sound and turned around and saw an Emperor Penguin standing there. I was scared only for a second but it was small. My Dad said they can grow up to 1.3 or 1.5 meters when they are an adult. They are the tallest type of penguin. My Dad also said it’s only a chick because it’s only 40 centimetres tall and still fluffy. Then it got scared of me and waddled away quickly. A very strong blizzard came and the two tents are ten metres away so we had to put a rope connecting the tents. One of the tents had food, water and equipment like ice pick axe, skis, goggles ,clamps, and rope for when we go exploring. We played a card game together and then we went to sleep.

    Day 2
Brrrr this morning was freezing. I woke up and ate my breakfast. I ate wheat bix with milk it was delicious. We went exploring and saw more penguins and saw a weddell seal sleeping on an iceberg by itself. Did you know they can grow two metres long. It was sad because we were coming to the end of our last day. I packed my bags and got in the helicopter and flew back. But before we got back we saw a pod of blue whales in the water swimming. We landed on the helideck and that was the end of my two day trip to Antarctica.

  34. Day 1:
Yay! I was feeling excited because I'm on a ship and about to board a helicopter to fly to Antarctica. Finally I was on the helicopter, I can't wait to see all the seals and fury penguins. We landed on the land of Antarctica, I felt really really and I mean really cold.I got scared when a leopard seal came up to me and opened his big wide mouth like it's going to eat me. The elephant seal looks and sounds funny, I laughed at it and felt like falling down. i was so tired after all the
exploring and so i slept peacefuly in my warm and comfy bed.

    Day 2:
Good morning! I was so excited to do some more exploring of the Coldest and windiest place on earth. i put on my thermal clothes. when I went outside I felt like it was -100 celcius " Everybody let start moving " said my dad. I was alrady to go and see the icebergs , glaciers and the cute animals.I got to see all the cute baby Chinstarp penguins and the Elephant seal was coming towards me and opening it's mouth and showing it's big sharp teeth. Luckily my dad got a big long pole and banged it on it's head making it to fall down. After the seal Era I took my gloves of and touched some ice (snow) it was freezing cold. I felt a small tingle hen i touched it , my dad said that i coud keep it and put it in my flask bag , I was so happy. But then we neede to go back to the helicopter. We went on the helicopter and 20 minutes later we were on the boat (ship), I felt like I have been to Antarctica for 1 year. It had been great.

  35. Day One
My heart dropped, when I found out I was going to go on a helicopter. I was feeling sick, but excited at the same time. I saw the helicopter land on the helipad, it was so big. This man came and took our bags that had our equipment in, including: our tent, our clothes, stock and our crampons to make sure we don't slip. My friend got in the helicopter first, then I got in. Then we took off, I felt sick because it was going fast. I saw massive icebergs. Did you know that 10% of an iceberg is above water and 90% is below the water. I also saw crevasses and snowy mountains.

    Day Two
We started to slow down, I felt calm. We landed, I got off the helicopter. I felt a gust of wind hit me, then I realised I was on the coldest, driest and windiest place on earth. I turned around to a squeaky sound, it was an Adelie penguin. I was so amazed because I never thought I would see a penguin. After that we went and looked for a place to set up our warm tent. As we were walking the snow started to get slippery, so I put on my crampons, to make sure I didn't slip. We finally found a good spot to set up our tent. Soon after we set up our tent we got in and ate some food, it was delicious. When we had finished eating we kept exploring Antarctica. Then I saw the helicopter that was taking us back to the ship. When the ship landed we got on and took off. Then I said to myself, that was a trip to remember because I got to go to Mawson's Hut, I saw icebergs Andre many different exciting things. This time the helicopter didn't make me feel sick, because I was used-to the speed. We landed and I got back on the ship. It was fun

  37. Day One:

Today I was so nervousited (nervous and excited), I was going to fly in a real life actual
helicopter. I am here I thought to myself, what happens if we fall, what happens if we crash and die. I was doubting myself, but with my dad by my side I knew I could do it. We finally landed I was so overwhelmed that we didn’t crash. My dad told me I had my eyes shut the entire helicopter trip and that we would go on it tomorrow but, he would make sure my eyes were open.

    Day Two:

When we arrived at the helideck we were ready to take off, the trip was so much fun but the noise of the helicopter was so annoying. Also we saw an elephant seal and so many crevasses.
I was astonished that I was flying over the most windiest and driest place on Earth. When we got back to the boat I was sad because the trip was nearly over. I slept well that night, then we went home.

I woke up this morning feeling tired and sick I was vomiting all night. When I got out of bed I kept bashing into the walls to find myself in the supply room ,where I got a pick-axe, rope, crampons a stock, food, water and a rubber boat. Then I walked out into the cold, frosty air to the helideck.I felt so scared because I have never been on a helicopter before.I stepped onto the big, blue, noisy helicopter and took off .On the trip I saw lots of pack-ice and crevices, I felt so frighten and the worst part was I had to eat my tuna and lettuce sandwich on the helicopter and every time I tried to bite ,I bit my lip.By the time I finished my sandwich my lip was bleeding.YAY ! I just landed and I have already seen a baby emperor penguin it’s sooooooooo………. cut and fluffy . Did you know they can reach 1.15 m tall ?
oh so back to landing. As soon as I got down from the helicopter I ran to my dad who had already been here for 3 months..After that I unpacked my suitcase , watched a movie with my dad and went to bed.

    Day 7
    Sunday ,10th December

Today I was so tired I stayed up to 11:30 watching spiderman , but it was all worth it.Today we went expore I saw yet another penguin but this time it was a Gentoo penguin they can grow upto 90 cm that’s what dad told me he also told me if Antarctica’s ice sheet melted , the worlds oceans would rise by 60-65m that made me feel a little worried so we went indoors to say goodbye to everyone.I’m so happy because I get to excape this weather and because my Dad said he was coming home with me ,I can’t wait to see the look on mums face when Dad walks through the door. After saying goodbye Dad and I hoped onto the helicopter ,as the helicopter took off I waved goodbye to the dry ,windy place I call Antarctica.

  42. Day 1

It was the big day. I got to go on a helicopter ride to the base camp in Antarctica, I was soo excited. I had changed into my waterproof clothes and packed my gear consisting of a pick axe,a pair of crampons, a walking stick, some pocket warmers and rope.I walked down the hallway and out onto the helideck. There it was,the helicopter in red. It had multiple blades , a tail blade, four seats and two landing gears. I got in the helicopter and the pilot pressed random buttons to lift off and a joystick to steer.I had never been on a helicopter so at first it was all weird .15 minutes later we touched down on the cold, dry, windy place,Antarctica.I got off and rushed to base camp as I was soo exhilarated to see the base.I found my room and I unpacked all my gear. By the time I had unpacked and ate my dinner of pasta and meatballs, it was 7:30pm. My eyes were drooping and red. I laid down my head and nearly dozed off but I managed to write this entry.

    Day 2
I heard a loud groan coming from outside the base. It was only 4am and I was awake.I decided to go out and find what made the loud groan which woke me up . I put on my clothes with my snow gear, walked outside and started searching. To my amazement I found a colony of Adelie penguins walking walking in a line trying to search for food. They were short, black and white and had wide open eyes. I came close to one of them sneakily and they seemed to be fine until one of them squawked loudly.I immediately ran back to the safety of the warm base.

I had nothing better to do apart from going around the base and seeing what was in it. I first went to the toilets which wasn’t amazing. It was just a wooden toilet with a roll of nearly empty toilet paper. The next room was the lounge room which had soft leather couches with a big table to play board games provided. There was also a pool table that was missing the 8 ball which was never found and a small cabinet of alcohol. Finally the bedroom. It had a row of bunk beds all with its own bedlamp but there wasn’t much apart from a toilet at the end of the room. Then it was finally time to go home, so I packed all my gear and belongings into a cramped suitcase and dragged it all the way to the helipad. I hauled it onto the helicopter barely scraping the floor and then I was off. The noise while on the journey to the Aurora Australis was deafening and loud. When I landed, I ran to the base to write this diary.

    Bye

  43. Dear Diary,

    Day 7,
On the 7th day, I woke up feeling super excited to explore Antarctica from the helicopter. In the meantime, when we were walking near the helideck, my dad and I were packing important equipment such as a medical kit, tent tools, food just in case were hungry and a pickaxe. Once we had departed, my heart began to beat really fast because it felt like we were going to crash. 20 minutes later, we landed on Antarctica. When we all came near the glacier I felt extremely scared. When it is getting dark, my dad and I built a tent and saw a really cute Chinstrap penguin but came along a Leopard seal that hunted the penguin. So I went to sleep.

    Day 8,
I felt so exhausted! We had to go at 5am so we decided to stay a bit longer and see if there are other animals out there. As soon as I was going outside I remembered to dress my snow clothes and brought a pickaxe to begin the journey. Once we had discovered about the animal, there was a helicopter that picked us and went back to the helideck. I went to sleep feeling really exhausted.

Today l’m so was so excited to go to Antarctica. The most exciting part is I’m going on a helicopter.I packed my stuff and left my house to the dock.when I entered the ship I felt really
sick like a dog lying on the old bench. It was time to ride on the helicopter so I lifted my bags to
the helicopter put the seat belt and rode on the helicopter to Antarctica. We landed on the cold
ground and I said to the pilot of the helicopter goodbye and I walked off to the base. When I arrived to the base I was hungry then the manager of the base welcomed me and gave me
some food.A couple hours later I set my tent outside of the base. After a long day it was time a good sleep.

    Day 2

  46. Day One,
Crash ! Immediately the helicopter had skidded across the bright white snow dangerously. I bolted miles and miles until i had met a angry colony of Elephant seals. I stood in fear as the 2 metre elephant seal stood over me like i was about to get eaten ! Suddenly, I thought to myself if i stood in my spot i could patiently wait and hopefully the Elephant seal would get tired and retreat. Amazingly, I bolted across the land like Usain Bolt. I had dazed of into a deep deep sleep….
Zzzzz ! What happened, how did i end up here ? A colony of penguins had taken me into a shelter and seated me into a rocking chair. I furiously grabbed my shovel and i started digging for my life. I had a mission, to break off a piece of an iceberg. 1...2...3… Bang ! I had hit the iceberg so hard i didn’t know where i was. So i decided rest for the night.
    Day Two,
It was time to head back to the helicopter. I felt extremely proud of myself being in the coldest, windiest and driest place on earth. Anyways, i had continued my journey. Bzzzzzz! I could hear the helicopter. I ran and ran until i could reach the helicopter. Immediatley i had got on the helicopter.

    Farewell Antarctica….

  47. Day 1
I was so excited to go on the helicopter trip to Antarctica,as soon as I went on the helicopter I felt relaxed and clam. During the trip I didn’t feel the same way as I before. The sound of the helicopter sounded like a horrible washing machine, it was so loud I thought I was deaf. But on the good side I saw some massive crevasses, penguins and seals. Did you know Antarctica is the driest, windiest and coldest place on Earth, as soon I came out of the helicopter i saw a baby penguin I tried to tell the others but they were unpacking water, food, pickaxes, spiked boots and gloves. I was exhausted so I went to have a relaxing sleep.

    Day 2
I was so pumped to be exploring Antarctica, I felt like a real scientist exploring the gaps that hasn’t been explored. When I was traveling i came across 3 penguins, as soon i saw it i hugged them their fur was so soft and warm it was like hugging a 2 teddy bears. Did u know the parents has to chew the babies food so the baby is able to eat, there is 17 species of penguins in Antarctica. The trip was nearly over i had to go on the helicopter I was having my last look of Antarctica. Wow! What an amazing 2 days I’ve had.

  50. Helicopter Trip Andy Ho

    Day one:

Whoosh! Whoosh! The helicopter swinged its blades as loud as a bullet. I was excited and scared as I entered the helicopter. One, l was scared because the helicopter looked old and rusty. Two, I was excited because it was a new place. It took off, I saw among animals among lots of others. I saw skua, seals, penguins and whales. While crossing the cold, dark desert. I also saw glacier in the shapes of humans or animals. E.g monkey. The helicopter landed on the helipad on the station. The temperature there was cold and the crew and I were on the edge of freezing to death. We brought a pickaxe, water, rope and some spiked shoes in order to explore the coast of Antarctica. As we trekked across the coast a elephant seal sneaked behind me. It scared me out of my skin, The 2 metre seal. We set up camp and shared our rations.

    Day two

We woke and pack up our camp. We had called a automobile specifically made for Antarctica instead of walking back to the station. While on the automobile I felt clam and relaxed as I took photos. We reached the station and board the helicopter than the ship.

  51. Diary Entry,
    Day 1 25/8/2015

Today was going to be a fantastic day that was what I said to myself in the chilling cold air of Antarctica. The beaming sunlight shining through the port hole as I was waking up. I was getting out of bed, it was very harsh weather when I got out of bed. I saw a Skua flying over our boat, as it flew away a feather plumages from its wing into my freezing hand. Then the helicopter came from out of nowhere and landed onto our helipad. It was finally time for me to have my first hand two day experience of Antarctica. The helicopter has a scarlet coat, two choppers which can carry from 2 - 10 people.

    Day 2 26/8/2015

It took us half an hour to land in the white snow of Antarctica. The first animal I saw was an Emperor Penguin as was chasing a school of fish. My mate dragged me to the base since I was dumbfounded by spectacular scene. I unpacked I took out my titanium pickaxe, my crampon, tent, pillow, sleeping bag and my can of beans. Then a group of leopard seal jumped out of the water trying to catch the gentoo penguin.

  52. Day one:
It was today to go to Antarctica. The helicopter was starting up I was so excited, but worried because the helicopter might crash, so I was holding on tight while the heli was ascending fast. I saw a few glaciers and one of them looked like a cave with animals in side. The waves were getting higher so we went higher and the heli was wobbly. We were going so fast that I fell and I couldn't get up. Finally we saw the shore and we also saw Macaroni penguins and their eyes freaked me out. We went over Antarctica and we saw gigantic crevices and big fat Elephant seal flopping everywhere. We went above mountains and we saw some penguins walking up the mountain and one of them pushed another penguin off and I was laughing my head of. We got to the top of the mountain and I could see everything, the land, mountains, animals everything. Then we went to the bottom, seted up the tent and went to sleep.
    Day two:

I woke up and it was really uncomfortable so I couldn’t get up. After a while in pain trying to get up I finally got out of the tent and felt like a little walk so I was walking and I saw a leopard seal, I was so silent and I nearly fainted, so I walk the other direction and went back to the tent. Finally we continued our journey and we put on our crampons and we got a spear tent incase we get lost and it's night. we were walking and we saw chinstrap penguins diving in the water and other things that were disgusting. we went to a place with friendly weddell seals and I got to touch some and take a picture with them. We saw a small crevice and I nearly fell into it but I safely went around it. After a while we decided to go back to the tent and have lunch. Them it was time to go but I took some ice when we landed on a glacier. We saw the ship and we landed on the helideck, and I was sad that I wouldn't go to Antarctica for a long time.

  53. Day 1
I got out of bed with a spark of excitement. I was going on a helicopter trip to Antarctica. I was so excited. I packed my essentials, including spiked boots, a tent, some rations, crampons and a sleeping bag. As I got on the helicopter my excitement turned to fear and I was having second thoughts about going to Antarctica. On the helicopter I felt happy to be of the boat after hours of seasickness. The Antarctic was so windy and had thousands of cevasses.
I saw crowds of penguins taking up all the space and some fluffy chick penguins. Antarctica is the driest place on earth because it never rained. The helicopter was very fast which made it ok so I didn’t get plane sick because I was on a boat for 8 days. I was so dizzy as soon as we landed. I saw so many emperor penguins which was the tallest of all the penguins. The male penguins sits on the eggs to keep it warm. I sleep early to get the sickness out of me

    Day 2
I get out of bed at 4:00am and was extremely tired. It took thirty minutes to get out of bed when my eyes fully opened, there was an elephant seal staring at me. It was so windy and was extremely cold. There were thousands of eyes staring at me. I ran as fast as I could and abandoned everything and ran to the helicopter. I land on the boat and thought about Antarctica for being the worst continent in the world.

  54. Day 1
I’m so cold, scared and lonely waiting for the helicopter to come and pick me up to go on a 2 day trip to Antarctica. YES!!! finally it has arrived the instructor instructed me onto the helicopter and off the boat, the boat was very wobbly which made the helicopter wobbly and it made feel like I was going to fall off and into the freezing cold icy water. I was so excited to leave i could see the big white iceberg and pack ice with animals . The Helicopter began to lift off and into the air, the helicopter motor was so loud and really annoying. We were so close to the land I began to feel really cold , the coldness was going through my snow jacket, boots, thermal jacket and beanie it felt like my body was frozen . I could see large penguins, seals and very large icebergs it was as big as a whole school building .We finally reached Antarctica we landed on the icy cold, wet white pack ice . I stepped of the red helicopter and onto the white, cold pack ice it was so cold . Suddenly i heard a sound that sounded like two feet coming towards me it began to get louder and louder as it came towards me. I slowly turned around out saw that it was an Emperor penguin with krill in it’s mouth it was so cute, then it got scared and ran back to it’s family of emperor penguins and chinstrap penguins. So put up my tent and unpacked my clothes, pick axe. sledge hammer, big boots and winter clothing.

    Day 2
Suddenly I woke up to a crashing sound, I quickly got out of my warm cuddly sleeping bag and open my tent and looked out to see what was making such a loud crashing noise, it was the blue cold icy water crashing onto the large white iceberg and pack ice. There was no point going back into my warm cuddly sleeping bag so I decided to go outside and explore Antarctica and the amazing animals and things there are to do around the coldest place on earth. so I took my pick axe, sledge hammer and put on my big boots, thermal clothing, beanie and my long socks and went out exploring. I saw a lion seals and chinstrap penguins eating krill and fish. The hours went past of me exploring and finding new and interesting things about the coldest place on earth. Finally it was time for me to go back to the ship. I went back to my tent and packed my vital equipment and thermal clothing and walked to where I was told to wait for the helicopter to come and pick me up. As the big red helicopter came down to pick me up and the other passengers the instructor called out we have 2 passengers missing we need to find them, about 5 minutes later the arrived and we were able to get onto the loud red big helicopter and go back to Antarctica. What an amazing experience it has been!

  55. Day 1
I just woke up to a loud noise, I went outside and saw the pilot start the helicopter. He called me to get ready so I went to pack my equipment. I packed spiked boots, an ice pick and a camera. I was nervous when I made my way to the blue helicopter. The helicopter was extremely fast it only took 10 minutes to get there. Once we arrived we spent the rest of the day taking pictures and examining the animals. The animals were pretty calm for a while until the two elephant seals started fighting, did you know that the male elephant seal weighs about 3000kg and the females weigh about 300-900kg.

    Day 2
Another day in Antarctica i couldn’t wait, we woke up and went out sightseeing. While we were walking we saw some macaroni penguins, did you know macaroni penguins are about 2 feet tall and weighs about 10 to 11kg. We we observing some weddel seal when a snowstorm occurred, so we dug a big hole and sheltered for a couple of hours. The storm wore off so we made our way to the helicopter, we packed our bags and entered the helicopter. I had such a fun time but it’s time to leave.

  56. Day 6
Today was the most exciting day, we landed on Antarctica with a helicopter! I couldn’t wait to see the animals on the land, I felt so excited last night that I drew pictures of the different animals in Antarctica. Yaaay, it was morning time but I still felt so tired from the night before, anyway I quickly packed some things I need to take like crampons, ski boots, a pick axe, some food, thick layered clothes, tent and a sleeping bag.I was wondering how cool it would be to be going to the most coldest and driest place on earth. After that I ate my breakfast and grabbed my bags and carefully hopped onto the helicopter. The noise of the helicopter blades was deafening but the view and experience of flying on a helicopter was all worth it. The view from the helicopter was amazing you could see all the icebergs and the icy cold blue sea with the swimming seals. First we went to look at the animals and observe what they do, I heard some type of high pitched squeaking so when I turned around I found this giant Emperor Penguin which was approximately 3 metres tall which means it is an adult. We didn’t want to disturb any animals so we found a spot where we could put our tent to camp overnight. I was comfy in my sleeping bag and went to sleep.

    Day 7
I woke up really happy and energized to explore more about the animals on Antarctica before I left on my helicopter back to the Aurora Australis. I got my breakfast that I had already packed, I quickly woke up my dad so we could go outside. We went to see the animals on the Antarctic ice and we saw Polar bears and lots of seals like Elephant seals and Weddell seals. I got the Elephant seals mistaken for a bunch of giant rocks but then I saw two pairs of eyes staring right at me! When we came to find the Polar bears they were all in the sea and we didn’t to be a close encounter and disturb them. It was then 4:00pm so we had to get back to the tent and pack up because the helicopter was meant to pick us up at 4:30pm and our tent was quite far away, so we walked back to our tent to pack up our things and just in time the helicopter arrived so we quickly got on. The view was better on our way back because it was the afternoon, I got a bit airsick on the way back but luckily we were near the Aurora Australis. The helicopter landed on the helideck and we went back inside the ship. That was a memorable trip i will never forget

  57. Day 17

I just got of the ship onto the helicopter by a ladder. When I got into the helicopter,I felt a bit scared because as the minutes rose the helicopter got higher and higher until we were finally in sky.About 1 minute before we were arriving on Antarctica I started feel excited because my dream was finally coming true.

Hooray ! i was so happy when we landed on the helipad. My dad said that it would just take 2 minutes for us to get out so we don't get sick or nothing bad happens to us.
2 minutes after landing we got out and our tour guide showed us to our hut where we will be staying for the two days. The snow was rising higher to my knees, i was so frightened because the snow was extremely cold. I couldn't feel my feet, they were extremely cold.

My dad said to go around and find some friends.I meet this girl seating down by herself. She told me she was there because her dad was hanging out with is his mates. So i asked her if she would like to come with me and my dad to see some animals. She had to ask her dad and luckily he said yes.So my dad took her and I to find some animals and to have lunch.

We used a snowcat trucker to get around, first stop seals I said. I say the seals look grey as the clouds in the sky.I think they eat fish well even blinking for the fifth time I saw a seal lion AAAAAAAAAAAAA! I was so frighted and also its whiskers were as long as my favourite straw. After exploring with nina unfortunately we had to go back to base with the snowcat trucker. 3 minutes after being in the snowcat trucker we arrived back to base. The first thing i did was have a shower then went to dinner. The food there was amazing it's even better than the food back in sydney. After eating dinner we watch some of the scientist and other people playing poker. It was so fun even me and nina got a turn to try we good for starters.we went to bed finally i was so happy because of the long day.

    Day 18

After 14 hour asleep i was happy to get up because i was calm with myself after that terrifying experiences with a male seal lion which was 400kg,man that a day that i will never forget.I had a 3 minutes shower then I went for breakfast.Breakfast was even more delicious than yesterday dinner. After that I went to pack my things I brought with me lollies, clothes, shoes, diary, stocks.skies, food and ect.

After that it was time to go back. The wind was extraordinarily harsh when it was rising higher every second. Before we entered the helicopter we saw a flock of emperor penguins on a huge iceberg. They were so cute also they were as tall as my stocks that i was holding in my hands.

We got into the helicopter it was so noisy as a jackhammer. As soon as we got into the helicopter I felt pretty sick in my stomach I felt butterflies but that did not stop me from sitting down.

The helicopter rose,I started to feel much better. Before i even to begin to talk i saw a humongous crevvases and pack ice. They looked amazing from so high out, but so small. After 3 minutes in the air, we reached the helideck. It took 2 minutes to get out. That’s the end of my wonderful adventure to Antarctica and an experience I will never forget.

    Day 1
I was so excited, I had been on the ship for days but it felt like months. Me and my mum were getting ready to go on the helicopter. A nice man took our bags as my mum was helping me get on the big noise helicopter. It didn't take long for the helicopter to take off from the helideck and land on Antarctica. The pilot carefully landed us on the helipad.I was amazed with a pure hint of scaredness. It was slowly getting late so they gave us some nice warm soup and my mum caried to bed.

    Day 2
The next morning I woke up to a frightening chill. My mum woke me up saying that we were going down to the docks today to see some of the animals.I put a hundred layers of clothes on and also some gloves, goggles,a beanie and some weird spiky shoes called crampons.I was being extra careful going down to the dock because I was frightened of falling down a crevasse.I was amazed about how many penguins there were. My favourite species was the emperor penguin but as we were heading back I saw a dead seal. My mum and I were heading back to the shelter to get ready to get on the helicopter because our trip was coming to a close. We got on the helicopter in a hurry because they were predicting a storm. Now i’m on the ship on the way home I had a spectacular time.

  60. Day 1
I'm was so excited arrive to Antarctica one of the driest and windiest continent on earth. There was no delay,I was bored waiting and jumped on the helicopter like theres no tommorow,we waited for almost 25 minutes to arrive in the cold depths of Antarctica.Once we landed and setted up our camp and went exploring Antarctica for a while. When we came back we were so excited to find 4 penguins standing in a group,we took tons of
pictures then took our pickaxe to get some ice to show my friends.

    Day 2
This morning was awesome!I knew that this would be my last day here in the coldest continent that will give you the chills 70%.When I was playing with the emperor penguins which weigh 3 to 6 kg I was relevied that we were this lucky to find cute penguins.Once i packed my supply and went on the loud blue helicopter.Once we arrived back I was really mad we couldn’t stay for another day, after 5 minutes of me whining I ate dinner and went to sleep, that was 1 interesting adventure.

  61. Day 1
I was so excited when the captain of my ship called ourampons, a pickaxe, goggles (to block out the sun's reflection of the snow), binoculars, sunglasses and many more things that I will mention on the way. On the way to the helideck, my name on the loudspeaker of the ship. Its was amazing and unbelievable, I almost forgot my things and my suitcase. My suitcase was packed full with my clothes such as thermal undies, a beanie, scarf, thermal snow jacket, gloves and thermal pants. The equipment I packed were which is like a helipad but on a ship instead I nearly fainted because I was so excited. When I walked onto the helideck the bright red helicopters propellers started to roar. The sound was deafening, I couldn’t believe my ears. The helideck was surprisingly freezing. I walked towards the bright red helicopter and entered it. It was so warm, put on the headphones so we can contact each other (we used them because the roar of the rotors is so loud we can’t hear each other's voices). The helicopter took off even though I hadn’t put on my seatbelt, I was bumping up and down in my seat until eventually I was able to strap in. On the way to Antarctica we were dodging 100 metre high icebergs. Did you know that 90% of an iceberg is under the water. When we landed on Antarctica in 7 minutes. As quick as I could I hopped out of the helicopter with all my things. I ran to the base we were staying, after I unpacked my equipment and went to bed.

    Day 2
As I’m writing this, I am watching a group of Adelie penguins fishing. Did you know that Adelie Penguins can weigh up to 3 kilograms. I just saw a male emperor penguin looking after it’s egg, did you know that they can grow up to 1.5 metres tall. When we had lunch I packed my things and got ready to go home. As I boarded the helicopter my mobile phone rang, I answered it. It was my mum, she wanted to know what time I will arrive in Hobart. I put on my headphones and waited another 7 minutes of looking at gigantic icebergs through my window. When we landed on the helideck the ship started moving and towards Hobart. My mum, dad, older brother and my 2 twin sister were waiting for me. I was welcoming with a family hug and we set off home.

  62. Day 1
Today I woke up to the bewitching aroma of the sea, the staff members were very attentive.
The food they presented was very appetising. We boarded the helicopter to go to the best location to gaze at the Southern Lights. We boarded the quad bike to take a exhilarating ride back to the base. When we had finally arrived, we had a midnight feast around the camp fire. After we laid back and slept in our cosy sleeping bags.

    Day 2
The next day the leader of the expedition took us to view the wildlife near the bank.
The majestic leaping whale were amazing and the waddling penguins were so cute.We then took a tour around Mawson's Hut and had lunch near the place .The end of the expedition came around and everyone was disappointed. We boarded the Aurora Australis and headed home
